Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref 6564 (1959)

This is a superb Rolex Date automatic watch model with a stainless steel Rolex bracelet, dating to 1959. This watch is chronometer certified meaning it has passed stringent accuracy test at the observatory in Geneva. The stainless steel case is what Rolex call their 'Oyster' case, which is well sealed against the elements, with both a screw down case back and a screw down crown (to set the time you need to first unscrew it until it pops out, then pull out to put it in handset mode). 

The watch has the original dial, which is in absolutely exceptional condition, really all you would want in a vintage Rolex - it's lightly and evenly toned and retains the original luminous compound (nb this is long since exhausted, so the watch doesn't light up in the dark). The hands are original and in similarly wonderful condition.

The watch comes with an original Rolex flush-fit bracelet, which is date coded 1965, so possibly a later purchase for the original owner (the watch came to me with this combination of watch and bracelet).

The inside of the case back gives us the Rolex model reference (6564), as well as the date of production, which is third quarter of 1959 (III 59). Actually there are two references engraved: 6567 and 6564, the models are fairly similar but ref 6567 is normally seen with a fluted bezel, rather than the smooth bezel that this watch has, so I'd say it's a 6564. 

The watch is powered by a Rolex 1030 calibre movement, this is one of their foundational automatic movements from the 1950s, well engineered and honestly a pleasure to service (as an aside Rolex movements are some of the best engineered and most straightforward to service from a watchmaking perspective). The movement has been fully serviced and the time keeping is excellent.

The case and bracelet have both been ultrasonically cleaned, but not polished and the seals on the case have been replaced. The new seals will give a high level of water protection, but I would be careful to avoid submerging the watch in water unnecessarily. The watch comes with our standard 12 month guarantee. 

A simply superb example - these are rarely found in this condition, a great piece for wearing or for investment.
